  •             Clare Woods Academy has a history of being devoted to caring for children with special needs.  It was founded in 1968 and recently expanded, moving to Wheaton in 2013.  This school is currently enjoyed by 83 students ages 6 -22 years old.  They try to keep a typical school day schedule, but no day is the same at Clare Woods.  Students learn a variety of new skills, some of which include field trips to nearby Downtown Wheaton.  This year’s students received the chance to visit a dentist and speak to a police officer.  These experiences are made to be hands-on and practical for the students.

Each student has an Individual Education Plan set in place for them to ensure they are receiving the right amount of attention and reaching personal accomplishments.  Students are either in small classrooms, 6-8 students, or one-on-one with a teacher.   They practice and become familiar with necessary everyday skills, so that when they graduate at age 22, the student and their family can be confident in handling daily tasks.

The true secret ingredient that makes this school as great as it is has to be the staff.  They are a group of 100 passionate educators, specialists, and therapists.  All are trained in helping children with special needs and most have worked at Clare Woods for many years.  Each staff member wants to make it a fun and enjoyable experience for the students.  You can see the faces of some of these teachers below in the photo gallery.

If you are a parent of a child with learning and behavior disabilities or on the autism spectrum, talk to the school district and see how they can help get your child involved with Clare Woods Academy.  The school is always open for tours, even if you don’t have a child with special needs.  They love to share their work and passion with everyone.
