McCormick Museum Lecture on July 15th

June 30th, 2009

The Robert R. McCormick Museum at Cantigny Park, part of the McCormick Foundation, continues its lecture series this summer with the following free event:

Architectural Salvage as an Integral Part of Historic Preservation: Preserving Parts When the Whole Must Be Lost  - Presented by Rebecca Hunter on Wednesday, July 15, 7:30 pm

The primary objective of historical preservation is to save, restore and reuse old and historic buildings.  Yet not every building can be saved.  When a house cannot be saved in situ or be moved, deconstructing and salvaging architectural elements preserves something of the house and benefits restoration of other structures.  Hunter, recipient of the Elgin (IL) Mayor’s Award for Historical Preservation, will discuss architectural salvage, available salvage resources and conducting salvage operations.

The lecture is open to the public and will take place in the McCormick Museum’s historic Gold Theater.  Doors open at 6:45 pm.  Admission and parking are free.

Advance registration is encouraged.  Please call 630 260 8162.

The McCormick Museum is a historic house museum interpreting the life and legacy of Robert R. McCormick, former editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.  Hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday-Sunday, with visits by free guided tour.  Visit www.cantigny.org for more information and a complete schedule of Cantigny Park events.

Cantigny Summer Symphony Series

June 29th, 2009

Cantigny Park, part of the McCormick Foundation, will host three outdoor symphony concerts this summer.  Featured will be the Wheaton Symphony Orchestra on July 11; the DuPage Symphony Orchestra on July 25; and the West Suburban Symphony Orchestra on August 15.

“These concerts are a summer tradition at Cantigny,” said Matt LaFond, Cantigny Park executive director. “They are very popular, and many of our guests make a special night of it with elaborate picnic dinners.  It’s a touch of Ravinia right here in Wheaton.”

The themed concerts take place on the lawn outside the First Division Museum.  A large tent covers the orchestra stage but the audience is under the stars and towering oaks.  Concert guests are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Tickets for the following performances are now on sale:

• Wheaton Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, July 11, 8 pm
“The 60s Show”

• DuPage Symphony Orchestra
Saturday, July 25, 8 pm
“Tchaikovsky Spectacular”

• West Suburban Symphony Festival Orchestra
Saturday, August 15, 8 pm
“Vive la France!”

Tickets for each concert are $10 in advance or $15 the day of show.  An order form is available online at www.cantigny.org or call 630 260 8162.

McCormick Museum will host children’s activities on the south porch.

At 2 pm, Revolutionary War reenactors will lead a procession through the estate, with park visitors of all ages invited to march along behind them.  Decorated strollers, tricycles and scooters will add to the pageantry.
