Eco-Friendly Plants Offered at May 1 Native Plant Sale

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

WHEATON, Ill. – How would you like to have plants in your yard that don’t need watering or pesticides, require less maintenance and provide habitats for wildlife? On May 1, the Environmental Improvement Commission and the Wheaton Park District will host the annual Native Illinois Plant Sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Building, 821 W. Liberty Drive.

At the sale, you will find trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers native to northern Illinois. Free wood chips will be available (bring your own container), and rain barrels will be for sale. Because native plants are adapted to the climate and soils of our area, they are resistant to drought and insects, and they require less maintenance.

If you have pictures of plants that you purchased at previous Native Illinois Plant Sales, please email them to Steve Hinchee at shinchee@wheatonparks.org. The person who submits the best photos will receive $10 off their purchase at the sale and will have his or her photo on display at the sale.

Learn more about the plants that will be available by visiting the Wheaton Park District’s website.

PGA Pro Kevin Streelman at Cantigny

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Wheaton native to conduct free junior golf clinic at Cantigny Golf Academy on August 7

Cantigny Golf, part of the McCormick Foundation, and the Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) are pleased to announce a special “homecoming” event featuring PGA Tour professional Kevin Streelman.

Streelman, a Wheaton native, former Cantigny Golf employee and now a rising star on the PGA Tour, will conduct a complimentary session targeting junior golfers at the Cantigny Golf Academy on Friday, August 7.  The second-year PGA Tour member will speak about his journey from Illinois junior golf to the PGA Tour and answer questions from the kids.

A raffle benefitting IJGA, of which Streelman is an alumnus, will give registered junior golfers the chance to play golf with Kevin or caddie for him on the day of the event.  In addition, six essay contest winners will enjoy lunch with Kevin and his wife, Courtney. Raffle and essay contest details are posted on the IJGA website.

“This will be an exciting day at Cantigny Golf, especially for our many junior players,” said Mike Nass, executive director.  “Kevin is eager to give something back to junior golf and we’re happy to assist.  We believe, as Kevin does, that golf provides development opportunities for kids that go beyond the game itself.”

Streelman played, practiced and took lessons at Cantigny Golf as an amateur.  During his college years he worked in the golf shop and volunteered to help teach clinics.  His parents live in Winfield and are frequent players at Cantigny.

“I’m extremely excited about coming home to host my first professional clinic at the course where I learned to play,” Streelman said. “To be able to give back and help out those on similar paths as mine means everything to me.  Please come out to Cantigny and help me support the IJGA and junior golfers all across our state.”

Online registration at www.IJGA.org for the August 7 event is highly recommended.  Those registered by July 31 are automatically entered to win a foursome at Cantigny Golf plus other prizes.  Raffle winners for day-of-event golf with Kevin will be drawn from among pre-registered junior golfers prior to August 7th.  Raffle tickets may be purchased when registering online or at the event.

McCormick Museum Lecture on July 15th

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The Robert R. McCormick Museum at Cantigny Park, part of the McCormick Foundation, continues its lecture series this summer with the following free event:

Architectural Salvage as an Integral Part of Historic Preservation: Preserving Parts When the Whole Must Be Lost  – Presented by Rebecca Hunter on Wednesday, July 15, 7:30 pm

The primary objective of historical preservation is to save, restore and reuse old and historic buildings.  Yet not every building can be saved.  When a house cannot be saved in situ or be moved, deconstructing and salvaging architectural elements preserves something of the house and benefits restoration of other structures.  Hunter, recipient of the Elgin (IL) Mayor’s Award for Historical Preservation, will discuss architectural salvage, available salvage resources and conducting salvage operations.

The lecture is open to the public and will take place in the McCormick Museum’s historic Gold Theater.  Doors open at 6:45 pm.  Admission and parking are free.

Advance registration is encouraged.  Please call 630 260 8162.

The McCormick Museum is a historic house museum interpreting the life and legacy of Robert R. McCormick, former editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune.  Hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday-Sunday, with visits by free guided tour.  Visit www.cantigny.org for more information and a complete schedule of Cantigny Park events.
