Author Sean Naylor at 1st Division Museum

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

The First Division Museum at Cantigny invites the public to a free presentation by award-winning Army Times reporter Sean Naylor on Wednesday, August 5, at 7:30 pm.

Naylor will discuss Operation Anaconda, the largest battle of the Afghan war to date. He was one of only eight journalists allowed to accompany troops into the March 2002 battle, and his first-hand information is chronicled in Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda. As the book explains, what was intended as a grand gesture turned into a missed opportunity to crush what remained of al-Qaida and Taliban forces in Afghanistan at the time.

A book signing will follow Naylor’s presentation.

Doors open at 6:45 pm. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call 630 260 8227.

This event is part of the First Division Museum’s popular series, A Date with History. The programs, held on the first Wednesday of each month and other select dates, feature an evening of lively discussion with authors, panelists, historians and special speakers. For information about upcoming programs, please visit www.FirstDivisionMuseum.org.

The Cantigny First Division Foundation, part of the McCormick Foundation, promotes public learning about America’s military heritage and affairs through the history of the Big Red One—the famed 1st Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. It is located on the grounds of Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Illinois, the home of the late Col. Robert R. McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune and a veteran of the First Division in World War I.

Does Wheaton Chamber Membership Matter?

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Written by: Jeffery James of Spire2 Communications, Inc. www.spire2.com, Membership Development Chairman

Is your membership in the Wheaton Chamber worth the membership fee? During a recession the question comes up. In January when most were gripped in recession fear, the membership development committee hosted the first Membership Matters meeting. These are free events where Chamber members are invited based on a particular membership demographic. A group of about 20 attended the first meeting focused on restaurants and retailers. We had a round table discussion asking how the Chamber can help them and making sure they were aware of resources that already exist.

We listened intently to concerns and ideas. One that popped out was how can the Chamber connect with Wheaton College. The membership committee took on this challenge and worked on reaching the right people so that we could promote Chamber businesses.

Through networking we made a connection with the student development office. We discovered that the student survival guide for freshman was being eliminated because of budget constraints. We jumped right in and offered to offset their printing costs if we could provide advertisers to them — a win-win situation. The committee developed a program that will reach not just freshman, but every student on campus and more!

Would this have happened if no one gathered early one morning in January as fellow Wheaton Chamber members looking for ideas to beat the recession? Nope. When we work together we can do things that we couldn’t do on our own. This is the power of Chamber membership. Want to make it work for you? Get involved, provide ideas and help others. Need some extra help getting involved? Join a committee.

PGA Pro Kevin Streelman at Cantigny

Wheaton native to conduct free junior golf clinic at Cantigny Golf Academy on August 7

Cantigny Golf, part of the McCormick Foundation, and the Illinois Junior Golf Association (IJGA) are pleased to announce a special “homecoming” event featuring PGA Tour professional Kevin Streelman.

Streelman, a Wheaton native, former Cantigny Golf employee and now a rising star on the PGA Tour, will conduct a complimentary session targeting junior golfers at the Cantigny Golf Academy on Friday, August 7.  The second-year PGA Tour member will speak about his journey from Illinois junior golf to the PGA Tour and answer questions from the kids.

A raffle benefitting IJGA, of which Streelman is an alumnus, will give registered junior golfers the chance to play golf with Kevin or caddie for him on the day of the event.  In addition, six essay contest winners will enjoy lunch with Kevin and his wife, Courtney. Raffle and essay contest details are posted on the IJGA website.

“This will be an exciting day at Cantigny Golf, especially for our many junior players,” said Mike Nass, executive director.  “Kevin is eager to give something back to junior golf and we’re happy to assist.  We believe, as Kevin does, that golf provides development opportunities for kids that go beyond the game itself.”

Streelman played, practiced and took lessons at Cantigny Golf as an amateur.  During his college years he worked in the golf shop and volunteered to help teach clinics.  His parents live in Winfield and are frequent players at Cantigny.

“I’m extremely excited about coming home to host my first professional clinic at the course where I learned to play,” Streelman said. “To be able to give back and help out those on similar paths as mine means everything to me.  Please come out to Cantigny and help me support the IJGA and junior golfers all across our state.”

Online registration at www.IJGA.org for the August 7 event is highly recommended.  Those registered by July 31 are automatically entered to win a foursome at Cantigny Golf plus other prizes.  Raffle winners for day-of-event golf with Kevin will be drawn from among pre-registered junior golfers prior to August 7th.  Raffle tickets may be purchased when registering online or at the event.

Schedule of Events for Friday, August 7:

  • 8:30 am  Attendee check-in
  • 9:30 am Presentation – Kevin’s Story
  • 11:00 am Golf and On-Course Shoot-Out – spectators welcome
  • 1:30 pm Picnic and essay winners’ lunch; box lunches available for purchase
